In the context of disappointing road accident statistics in deoccupied communities, police and community representatives have launched a joint Safe Road initiative. The project, which is the result of the Working Group on Public Safety and Recovery (WGPSR), aims to strengthen traffic safety in the Bilozerka and Chornobayivka communities, which are a key transport artery connecting the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.
The urgency of the initiative is emphasized by the crisis situation on the roads. In 2023-2024 alone, more than 53 road accidents were recorded in these communities, in which 2 people died and 31 were injured. Every third accident occurred due to drunk drivers. Nationwide statistics are also worrying: in the first four months of 2025, more than 6.7 thousand road accidents with victims happened on the roads of Ukraine, which is 4% more than in the same period last year.
The initiative, proposed by a group consisting of representatives of the Main Department of the National Police of Ukraine in the Kherson region and the "Union" Foundation, provides for several measures designed to reduce the number of road accidents in the territories of the specified communities.
As part of the project, the police have received modern equipment: Dräger Alcotest 6820 breathalyzers with printers, portable charging stations, and tablets for recording offenses. At the same time, several information and educational activities are planned for the population, drivers, and personnel in the indicated communities.
The initiative's key goals are to increase public safety, reduce the number and severity of road accidents, and eliminate drunk driving.
This project is an example of effective cooperation between the police and the community for the common goal of creating a safe environment for all road users in war-affected areas.
The Union Foundation implements the Safe Road initiative in cooperation with the Main Police Department of the Kherson Region, under the technical administration of the Vzaemodiya Plus NGO, with the assistance of UNDP Ukraine and the financial support of the Government of Denmark.
